Medical insurance: eligibility and records

Check the product’s age, residence, health-disclosure and existing-cover requirements. Prepare the insurer’s checklist and ask licensed staff to clarify supplementary items.

Conditions for medical, critical-illness and life cover

Medical, critical-illness and life cover have different conditions. Check covered regions, definitions of illness or events, policyholder/insured relationships, waiting periods and exclusions, then prepare the relevant health and identity records.

When reviewing existing policies, record the policyholder, insured person, term, renewal conditions and covered regions. Separate individual and employer cover, and ask the insurer to confirm validity after relocation or a job change.

Four checks before applying

  • Do your age, residence and occupation meet the product requirements?
  • What health information must be disclosed, and when are further reports needed?
  • Which regions, conditions or treatments are excluded, and is there a waiting period?
  • Which claim documents are required, including any originals?

Keep written responses from the insurer or licensed adviser.

Claims must meet the policy’s covered-event, region, waiting-period and other conditions. Follow the insurer’s checklist for medical and identity records, submission methods and originals. Keep submitted versions and requests for further evidence. Records must match the insured person, policy and event; the insurer decides underwriting and claims.

Insurance eligibility and documents: scope before disclosure

Check age, residence, occupation, health, cover amount and the policyholder’s relationship to the insured against the product and insurer’s requirements. A licensed intermediary should check Hong Kong sales, identity and entry evidence for Mainland visitors. A booking does not mean an application is complete or cover is confirmed.

Insurance eligibility and documents: scope before disclosure
EvidenceWhen needed
Identity/relationshipPolicyholder and insured documents, birth/marriage evidence where relevant; beneficiary identity, relationship and allocation details.
Residence/financesAddress, occupation, income/assets, funding sources, tax residence and tax IDs as required for due diligence/underwriting.
In-person Hong Kong purchaseMainland visitors’ travel and lawful entry records and applicable declarations, checked by the insurer/licensed intermediary.
Medical disclosureComplete answers on diagnoses, tests, surgery, medication and follow-up; reports/examinations when the insurer requests them.
Existing coverPolicy summaries and amounts; replacement requires separate loss, waiting-period and declaration checks.

The insurer may request more evidence, add conditions or exclusions, postpone or decline cover. A completed form or payment does not establish cover. Submit sensitive files through controlled channels.

Check the issued policy

Check the insured person, cover amount, payment term, endorsements and exclusions when the policy arrives. New life policies covered by GL29 have a 21-calendar-day cooling-off period. Its scope, start date and refund terms follow the guideline and policy; other insurance may differ.
